New City Catechism Q&A 15

Q&A 15: Since no one can keep the law, what is its purpose? That we may know the holy nature of God, and the sinful nature of our hearts; and thus our need of a Savior.

Memory Verse: “For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.” Romans 3:20

This question teaches that the law serves to reveal sin, to guide, and to communicate the character of God. It helps our kids understand that the law is valuable in the life of the Christian.

Jesus was Dedicated  (Matt 2; Lk 2)

Bible Story Summary: When Jesus was a few weeks old, Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem and obeyed God’s law by dedicating Jesus. Simeon saw Jesus in the temple and praised God for keeping His promise to send the Messiah. Anna was also at the temple and shared the good news: the Savior was here!

Big Picture Q&A: What did Jesus do to save us? Jesus lived a sinless life, died on the cross, and rose from the dead.

Christ Connection: Throughout the Old Testament, God promised the arrival of a King who would redeem people. When Jesus arrived, Simeon and Anna knew He was the promised Messiah, God’s own Son. We can trust Jesus for our salvation, and like Simeon and Anna, we should share the good news.

Family Discussion Starters:

  • Why did Mary and Joseph take Jesus to the temple?

  • Who were the two special people that Jesus and His family met at the temple?

  • Who are some special people at your church who remind you of Anna or Simeon?

Ephesians 4:32

Daniel and the Scary Sleepover

Pg. 152-159 | Daniel 6 | Video

Introduction: Sometimes doing the right thing can be hard and even scary. However, God is powerful enough to save us from anything, so we can trust and obey Him no matter what! Despite the possibility of facing death, Daniel continued to trust and obey God in all situations because God is perfectly loving and all-powerful. He even trusted God when he was thrown into the lions’ den!

Big Truth: God is in Control

God is sovereign over everything, meaning He is powerful enough to accomplish everything that He has promised. This, coupled with His goodness and love, helps us trust Him in all things and for all things.

Activity: Reenact the story with your family. Take turns letting different people play different parts (Daniel, the king, the king’s helpers, the lions, the angel). Remind your child that Daniel was in a scary place despite doing the right thing, but God saved him even when things looked the worst.

Never Too Little

This story comes from Mark 10:13-16. The disciples wanted to stop people bringing their children to Jesus, but this is what he said: “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Jesus wants us to be his friends, and to follow him as King of our lives. But you don’t have to pay to enter God’s kingdom, and you can’t learn it by being good. As this story tells us, “You don’t have to be a great, big, super-good, important person to be God’s friend”. Instead it’s like a little child getting a present. It’s a free gift. Jesus welcomes everyone who comes to him like a child and puts their trust in him.

Play: Take turns “spying” things around the room. Tell the kids that Jesus always sees them and cares for them no matter what!

Jesus Heals: An Anatomy Primer

Our lesson for Sunday was “Jesus helps people because He loves them” and we read Jesus Heals.

“Great crowds came to Jesus, and He healed them.” This book presents different body parts and passages that relate to them throughout the Bible. Talk through the different parts of the body with your Littles and see which ones they can point to. Head (Lk 4:39-40); Eyes (Lk 18:41-43); Ears & Mouth (Mk 7:33-35); Back (Lk 13:12-13); Hand (Mk 3:1,5); Legs (Mt 9:2,6-8); Skin (Mt 8:2-3); and Body (Jn 11:32,40-44). As you talk about different body parts throughout the week, teach your child that Jesus helps people because He loves them. You could even sing “Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes” with your Little.

WRL Babies
God said His creation is good.

This week’s biblical concept for our babies is “God said His creation is good.” We read Let their be light: An Opposites Primer and talked about how each part of God’s creation is good. We also held up a mirror to your child and told him that God also created him and declared him to be good. As you go throughout your week with your child, remind him or her frequently of God’s good creation including you and your child!
