New City Catechism Q&A 17
Q&A 17: What is idolatry? Idolatry is trusting in created things rather than the Creator.
Idolatry is loving something in the created world more than God, the Creator, and all our hearts can be tempted to love and treasure earthly things more than God. We’re all created to worship and we worship something, is it God or an idol?

Jesus was Baptized (Matt 3; Mk 1)
Bible Story Summary: John saw Jesus and said: “Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” Jesus came to John to be baptized but John was confused. He baptized people who confessed their sins; Jesus never sinned! Jesus told John to baptize Him because God said it was right. God was pleased with His Son’s perfect obedience.
Big Picture Q&A: What did Jesus do to save us? Jesus lived a sinless life, died on the cross, and rose from the dead.
Christ Connection: Jesus never sinned, but He obeyed God and was baptized like sinners are baptized. Baptism reminds us of Jesus’ death and resurrection. It reminds us that when we trust in Jesus, we turn from sin and start a new life—a life lived for Jesus.
Family Discussion Starters:
What was John the Baptist’s important job?
How did John the Baptist prepare the way for Jesus?
What happened when Jesus came out of the water from being baptized?
What does baptism remind us of?
Family Activity: Think of some friends who have been baptized. Invite them over for dinner and ask them to share their testimonies and why they chose to be baptized.

Scripture Memory
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
God’s Messenger
Pg. 160-169 | Jonah 1-4; Hebrews 1:1-2 | Video
Introduction: Jonah doesn’t want to go to Nineveh because it will be dangerous and he doesn’t like the people of Nineveh. After the mercy shown to Nineveh, Jonah is angry that God forgave them. God cares for all people, even people we think are impossible to love. God’s message is for all people and He will go out of His way to reach even the hardest to love.
Big Truth: God love His Children
All that God does and all that God commands for His children stems from His love. No matter what happens in this life, we can trust that God is perfectly loving towards His children.
Activity: Sing “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” and explain that God cares about everyone.

The Man who would not be Quite
This story comes from Mark 10:46-52. Bartimaeus was a blind beggar, but he could see who Jesus really was. He called Jesus the “Son of David”, another name for the Christ, God’s promised perfect King, who would be from the family of King David. So in this story we call Jesus “the best King ever! The one God said was coming!” Bartimaeus believed that Jesus was the promised King, and also that Jesus could heal him. Bartimaeus believed in Jesus and followed him. Jesus welcomes everyone who believes in him and wants to follow him.
Jesus makes things better…and not just eyes. The Bible tells us that we are separated from God by our sin—the wrong things we do, say and thing. Jesus came to make this better. If we trust in Jesus, we can have our sin forgiven and be friends with God forever.
Play: Play “Red Light, Green Light”, but instead of moment use noise. When you say “green light” the Littles can be loud. When you say “red light” they are silent. “Yellow light” is a whisper.

Found (Psalm 23)
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. 2 He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. 3 He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. 4 Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. 5 You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. 6 Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.
Play: I Spy – Take turns “spying” things around the room. Tell your child that Jesus always sees him and cares for him. As God’s children, we are never lost, because in Him we are found.
WRL Babies
God made me special.
This week’s biblical concept for our babies is “God made me special.” We showed the babies their reflection and told them how God made them special and there’s no one else in the world exactly like them. As you interact with your child this week, play with her feet and tell her how God made her feet so she can walk one day. Tell her how God made her ears so can hear your voice. Tell her how God has a plan for her that only she can do, because God made her special.
