New City Catechism Q&A 44

What is baptism?

Baptism is the washing with water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

MV: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matt. 28:19

Baptism is an outward sign of an inward reality–cleansing from sin. The aim of this lesson is to help our kids understand what the sacrament of baptism is. The scripture for this lesson is Matthew 28:16-20.

Jesus Warned about Not Loving (Mt 23)

Bible Story Summary: Jesus taught that the religious leaders did everything to make themselves look great. They made up rules that led people away from God. Jesus warned that whoever exalts himself will be humbled. Jesus said the religious leaders looked clean but were dirty on the inside.

Big Picture Q&A: How is Jesus the perfect Prophet? Jesus perfectly reveals God the Father and fulfills what the prophets spoke.

Christ Connection: Jesus said that the greatest commandments are to love God and love others. (Matt. 22:37-39) The religious leaders loved themselves most of all. When we trust in Jesus, He makes us right with God and changes our hearts so we can love and obey Him.

Family Discussion Starters:

  • Why did Jesus describe the religious leaders as beautifully decorated tombs?
  • What does it mean to be humble?

Family Activity: Play a game of charades. Write occupations, animals, activities, and chores on strips of paper and place in a bowl. One person will draw a strip and act out what is written while the rest of the family guesses. Talk with kids about how the religious leaders acted like they were righteous, but they did not have love.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

2 Corinthians 5:17

A New Way to See

Pg. 334-341 | Acts 6-9, 12-28; Col. 2; Rom. 8; Eph. 2

Introduction: No matter who you are, when you trust in Jesus, you are a new creation! This is true of anyone who trusts in Jesus, including a man named Saul. Saul was the first major enemy of the early Christian church. Yet God had a plan for Saul. After an encounter with Jesus, Saul believed in Jesus, became the Apostle Paul, and turned his message of hate to the happy news of the love of God!

Big Truth: God is making all things new

God created all things good, but everything was broken when Adam and Eve rebelled  against God. However, through Christ, God is making all things new. He is restoring them to how they were supposed to be.

Activity: Sing “Jesus Loves Me” and explain that God doesn’t wait for us to be perfect, but comes to us just as we are, bringing His love.

Noah and the Very Big Boat

This is the story God sparing Noah from the great flood! You can watch the story here.

Play: Name that Animal – Make different animal sounds and see if the kids can guess the animal it belongs to (ex. Monkey, elephant, dog, cat, goat, bear, tiger, etc.) Explain that even though the whole world was bad, bad, bad, God promised to keep Noah and his family safe through the flood. He kept his promise and then made another promise to never flood the earth again.

From Eden to Bethlehem: An Animal Primer

Our lesson for Sunday was “God made animals, birds and fish too,” and we read From Eden to Bethlehem.

This book presents different animals and scriptures that relate to them throughout the Bible. Go through the different animals with your littles and see which animal noises they can make. Snake (Gen 3:15); Ram (Gen 22:16, 18); Wolf (Isa 9:6; 11:6); Lion (Isa 11:7, 9); Donkey (Lk 1:30-32); Sheep (Lk 2:10-11, 13-14); Camel (Mt 2:11). Help you Littles with their animal sounds and talk about how God created animals!

WRL Babies
People at church sing, talk to God, and listen to Bible Stories.

This week’s biblical concept for our babies is “People at church sing, talk to God, and listen to Bible stories.” It is a healthy and important practice that we gather as a church community each week, and it’s good for our babies to experience this rhythm of our lives. As you talk about church throughout the week, explain to your Littles that you attend church in order to worship God and be encouraged by other Christians.
