New City Catechism Q&A 48
What is the church?
A community elected for eternal life and united by faith, who love, follow, learn from, and worship God together.
MV: “But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.” 2 Thessalonians 2:13
God has called people with saving faith in Jesus to unite together as a body called the church. The aim of this lesson is to help the kids to understand what the church is as well as its purpose. The Bible passage for this lesson is 2 Thess. 2:13-17.

Jesus is our Perfect Prophet (Deuteronomy 18)
Bible Story Summary: Moses was a prophet of Israel and spoke God’s words to the people. Moses told the Israelites that God would raise up a greater Prophet and the people should listen to Him. Moses warned against false prophets whose words will not come true. God kept His promise to send the perfect Prophet whose words give life.
Big Picture Q&A: How is Jesus the perfect Prophet? Jesus perfectly reveals God the Father and fulfills what the prophets spoke.
Christ Connection: Jesus is the perfect and final Prophet God promised to send. Jesus is the Word who became a man. He came into the world not only to tell people God’s message but to bring people to God through His death and resurrection.
Family Discussion Starters:
- How was Jesus similar to the prophets who came before Him?
- How was Jesus greater than the prophets who came before Him?
Family Activity: Design a family newspaper. Assign each family member to report on certain aspects of your life this week. This might include dinner menus, family activities, or interviews with family members. Talk with kids about the good news that came through Jesus, our perfect Prophet.

Scripture Memory
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.“
The Story and the Song
Pg. 12-17 | Psalm 19 & Hebrews 1
Introduction: The Bible is God’s Rescue Story. The Bible is not a list of rules or ways to think, but a rescue story our children are invited to be a part of.
Big Truth: God Loves His Children
All that God does and all that God commands for His children stems from His love. No matter what happens in this life, we can trust that God is perfectly loving towards His children.
Activity: Let’s play a game! Have the family stand on one side of the room except one, the Rescuer. Tell a fun story about what the Rescuer is saving the children from! On “go”, the Rescuer runs over and saves one person, bringing him back to her side. Then, both rescue others, etc. When everyone’s been rescued, sit down and remind everyone that Jesus is our Rescuer.

Deborah & the Very Big Battle
This is a true story from the Bible about how God’s people stopped listening to God and got into a LOT of TROUBLE. When God speaks, we must always listen carefully and do what he says. We can always trust what God says because we know that he loves his people and that his words are always true.
Play: Play Simon Says with the kids. Tell them that listening to and obeying God is the most important thing we can do. We can listen to him by reading his word from the Bible and praying to him.

Psalm 23
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. 2 He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. 3 He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. 4 Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. 5 You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. 6 Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.
Play: I Spy – Take turns “spying” things around the room. Tell your child that Jesus always sees him and cares for him. As God’s children, we are never lost, because in Him we are found.
WRL Babies
God said His creation is good.
This week’s biblical concept for our babies is “God said His creation is good.” We read Let their be light: An Opposites Primer and talked about how each part of God’s creation is good. We also held up a mirror to your child and told him that God also created him and declared him to be good. As you go throughout your week with your child, remind him or her frequently of God’s good creation including you and your child!
