WRK 4th-5th Grade
The Biblical Story
We are spending the Sundays in June learning lessons from a book called, The Radical Book for Kids: Exploring the roots and shoots of faith by Champ Thornton. This Sunday, we learned two lessons, the Bible in One Sentence (p. 2-4) and The Long & Short of it (p. 183-189).
Big Idea: It is good for Christians to be able to summarize what the Bible says and what we believe by faith.
We talked through ways we could summarize the entire Bible into one sentence. Something like “God made it, we broke it, Jesus fixes it.” by Michael Williams, or “The story of the Bible is that through Jesus, God is restoring everything that sin ruined.”
Then, we discussed how to summarize what we believe by faith. For this we reviewed the Apostles’ Creed:
“We believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.”
Challenge for the month of June: We are challenging each other this month to memorize the books of the Bible! (If your child has already memorized the books, he or she can memorize Psalm 1, Psalm 23, and Psalm 100).

Scripture Memory
“I heard every creature in heaven, on earth, under the earth, on the sea, and everything in them say, Blessing and honor and glory and power be to the one seated on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!”
Revelation 5:13

Jesus was Crucified (Matthew 27; Mark 15; Luke 23–24; John 19-20)
Bible Story Summary: After Jesus’ trial, soldiers took off His clothes and put a scarlet robe on Him. They made a crown of thorns and put it on His head. Then they hit Jesus and mocked Him. The soldiers nailed Jesus to a cross. For three hours darkness covered the land. Jesus cried out, “It is finished!” Then Jesus died and the temple curtain split in two. Jesus was buried in a rich man’s tomb.
Big Picture Q&A: How is Jesus the perfect King? Jesus perfectly rules over the universe as the King of kings.
Christ Connection: We deserve to die because of our sin, but God loves us and kept His promise to send a Savior. Jesus never sinned, but He died in our place. Now those who trust in Him have forgiveness through His blood and are no longer separated from God.
Family Discussion Starters:
- How did the soldiers treat Jesus before and during the crucifixion?
- What happened to the temple veil when Jesus died? Why?
Family Activity: Use painter’s tape to create a cross on an art canvas. Take turns splatter painting the canvas. After the paint dries, remove the tape to reveal the cross. Remind kids that Jesus’ last words declared that He had conquered sin and made forgiveness available for all who believe.

Scripture Memory
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.“
The Present
Pg. 62-69 | Genesis 22
Introduction: We all have to make choices about where we are going to place our hope and trust. In today’s lesson, we witness God asking Abraham to give up his only son. As Abraham climbs the mountain to sacrifice Isaac, he does not focus on his ability to do it, but on God’s ability to provide. When God asks us to do difficult things, we can trust Him to provide, too.
Big Truth: God sent a Savior.
Our hearts are broken and our world is broken. Because we can’t fix things, we need a Savior to make things right and restore relationships. Thankfully, God sent Jesus and the victory over sin and death is already won!
Activity: Sing “Father Abraham”. Remind your child that God kept His promise to Abraham and gave him a son. Through Abraham came Jesus who came to rescue all of us!

The Boy who Shared his Sandwich
This story comes from John 6 when Jesus feeds the 5,000. Jesus’ miracles were signs that show us who he is. Jesus told the crowd that he had come to get them something much, much better than food: “Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty” (Jn 6:35). He went on to tell them that he would give his life to pay for our sins, so that anyone who believes in him will have life for ever, in heaven with God.
Teach your child that People are important to God. God cares for us an provides not only for our physical needs but our spiritual needs as well.
Play: Play Chef! Ask the kids to play like they’re cooking for all of their friends. Let them “cook” something up in the kitchen. Remind them that we need food, but even more than that we need Jesus to give us life!

Big Theology for Little Hearts: The Church
Our lesson for Sunday was “People at church sing, talk to God, and listen to Bible stories.” and we read The Church by Devon Provencher. This book presents words and phrases that relate to the church. From these pages, our Littles are learning foundational truths about how much God and Christians love them.

God Helps Me Learn
From Birth to 1, our babies are learning exponentially! As you notice your Littles learning new things such as how to hold a bottle, how to smile, how to crawl, remind them that God helps us learn! Thank God for giving your baby a mind and the ability to learn and grow.
