New City Catechism Q&A 4

Question 4: How and why did God create us? God created us male and female in his own image to glorify him.

Memory Verse: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27

This lesson aims to ground children in the knowledge that they were created by a loving God in order to rule over his creation and to show his likeness to the world, while glorifying him with their lives

Peter Preached in Jerusalem (Acts 2)

Bible Story Summary: Peter explained how the Holy Spirit gave the disciples power to speak in different languages. Peter shared the gospel, and many people were sorry for their sin. Those who believed were baptized, and every day more people were saved.

Big Picture Q&A: Why does God command Christians to tell others about Jesus? We tell others about Jesus so they will hear and believe the good news.

Christ Connection: Peter’s sermon shows the Holy Spirit’s power to save and change those who trust in Jesus. God used Peter to preach about Jesus to the crowd so that thousands of others would believe and be changed as well. All who believe in Jesus are changed and will never be the same.

Family Discussion Starters:

  • After Peter preached the gospel, how did those who believed in Jesus begin to live differently?
  • How are we changed by the Holy Spirit?

Family Activity: Rake leaves and clean up a yard for someone you know needs help with this task. Work as a family to bring new life to the landscape. As you work, discuss how loving and serving others is part of the new life Jesus gives us. Remind kids that the Holy Spirit changes our hearts so that we want to live in a way that honors God.

The Teeny Weenie True King

Pg. 116-121 | 1 Samuel 16

Introduction: At first glance, you might think that God chose David because he was living righteously. However, as the story unfolds, David makes many mistakes just like Saul. The difference between David and Saul is that David has a heart that longs for God (Acts 13:22). He always returns to God humbly when he sins. This is what it means to be someone after God’s own heart. But in the end, only Jesus is fit to be our King.

Big Truth: God is in control.

God is sovereign over everything, meaning He is powerful enough to accomplish everything that He has promised. This, coupled with His goodness and love, helps us trust Him in all things and for all things.

Activity: Give your children the option to choose between a plain paper bag and a fancy gift bag. Prompt them to pick which they think is the best bag. Put party favors in the plain bag and reveal the them that outward appearance doesn’t always show true value. Explain again that God didn’t choose David because of his outward appearance, but because of his heart.

The Best Thing to Do

This story comes from Luke 10:38-42. Mary and Martha, and their brother Lazarus, were all friends of Jesus. When Jesus came to visit their home, the two women acted very differently. Mary sat at Jesus’s feet listening to him, but Martha was rushing around getting everything ready for their guest.

When Martha saw that Mary wasn’t helping, she complained to Jesus, but Jesus told her that Mary had made the best choice. Listening to Jesus is always the best thing to do!

Play: Play Simon Says. Tell your child that listening to Jesus is the most important thing we can do. We can listen to him by reading his word from the Bible and praying to him.

Psalm 23

1 The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. 2 He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. 3 He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. 4  Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. 5 You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. 6  Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.

Play: I Spy – Take turns “spying” things around the room. Tell your child that Jesus always sees him and cares for him. As God’s children, we are never lost, because in Him we are found.

WRL Babies
God made me special.

This week’s biblical concept for our babies is “God made me special.” We showed the babies their reflection and told them how God made them special and there’s no one else in the world exactly like them. As you interact with your child this week, play with her feet and tell her how God made her feet so she can walk one day. Tell her how God made her ears so can hear your voice. Tell her how God has a plan for her that only she can do, because God made her special.
