New City Catechism Q&A 34

We are on Q&A 34: Since we are redeemed by grace alone, through Christ alone, must we still do good works and obey God’s Word?

Yes, so that our lives may show love and gratitude to God; and so that by our godly behavior others may be won to Christ.

Memory Verse: “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” 1 Peter 2:9
Though they must be dissuaded from a works-based mentality, they also need to be taught how to respond to God’s saving grace with thankful and obedient lives…This question will allow the children to consider the role that God has given his people in his world.

God Loves All People (1 Corinthians 13)

Bible Story Summary: The Bible says God is love. He loves people—all people! And because God loves us, we can love others. Paul wrote about how we are to love others. He said that love is the greatest spiritual gift. Paul said that we must do all things in love. Paul described what love is like and said that love will never end. Love is patient, kind, not irritable, keeps no records of wrong, rejoices in truth, and never quits.

Big Picture Q&A: How do we know God loves us? We can know that God loves us because He gave us Jesus to forgive the sins of the world.

Christ Connection: God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. God is love, and God loves all people. He calls everyone who trusts in Jesus to love Him and love others.

Family Discussion Starters:

  • How does the Bible define love?

  • Paul describes lots of characteristics of love. Which one is the hardest for you to practice?

  • How has God shown us His love?

Family Activity: Write cards to friends to let them know how loved they are by God and by your family. Use a concordance to find Bible verses that mention the love God has for His children. Write the verses on the cards. Mail or hand deliver the cards.

Scripture Memory

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to sing praises to the Most High.”

Psalm 92:1

Advent: Love

Isaiah 9:6 | JSB pg. 144-151

Story Summary: The book of Isaiah is long and poetic, which can make it difficult to understand. This is a book of hope, looking forward to the promises of God and specifically the work of Jesus. God, long before the creation of the world, knew exactly what was going to happen when He sent Jesus. We can rejoice in what God has done and look forward with hope to the future.

Big Truth: God is in Control

God is sovereign over everything, meaning He is powerful enough to accomplish everything that He has promised. This, coupled with His goodness and love, helps us trust Him in all things and for all things.

Activity: Sing “Jesus Loves Me” and remind your children that Jesus loves each of them so much that He left His home in heaven to save us from our sin and bring us back into relationship with God.

WRL Babies
People at church sing, talk to God, and listen to Bible Stories.

This week’s biblical concept for our babies is “People at church sing, talk to God, and listen to Bible stories.” It is a healthy and important practice that we gather as a church community each week, and it’s good for our babies to experience this rhythm of our lives. As you talk about church throughout the week, explain to your Littles that you attend church in order to worship God and be encouraged by other Christians.
