New City Catechism Q&A 16
What is sin?
Sin is rejecting or ignoring God in the world he created, not being or doing what he requires in his law.
This lesson aims to help our kids understand what sin is and how it affects their relationship with God. We take a look at 1 John 3:4-10, emphasizing verse 4, “Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.”

Jesus Taught about Behavior (Matthew 6)
Bible Story Summary: Jesus taught people how to live for the kingdom of God. He taught them how to pray and that we should forgive others. He taught people not to collect earthly treasures that will not last, but to seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness first. He taught people to trust that God would meet their needs.
Big Picture Q&A: What did Jesus teach when He was on earth? Jesus taught about God and His kingdom. He taught that all Scripture is about Him.
Christ Connection: Jesus taught people what it means to follow Him. He taught how people should interact with God and others. Believers live to honor God—not to earn God’s favor but because they already have it.
Family Discussion Starters:
- Why is it important to not be showy in our generosity and prayers?
- Why do we need to forgive others?
- How can we seek the kingdom of God?
Family Activity: Spend some time watching birds at your home or a local park. Create a list or draw pictures of all the different birds you see. Discuss how God cares for the birds and how we are worth even more to Him. Remind kids that we don’t have to worry, but can freely live to honor God.

The Friend of Little Children
Pg. 256-263 | Matthew 18, 19; Mark 10; Luke 18 | Video
Introduction: No matter how old we are or how old we live to be, we are to come to Jesus as children. We have nothing to give to him except for ourselves. God’s love is a gift to us, all we have to do is take it!
Big Truth: God wants to talk with us
God wants a relationship with us. A great way to pursue this is prayer. God is a loving Father who delights in talking with His children. We can pray anytime, anywhere. Prayer is an opportunity to pour out our hearts to God.
Activity: Sing “Jesus Loves Me” and explain that Jesus loves your child and there is nothing He won’t do to care for him or her.

Never Too Little
This story comes from Mark 10:13-16. The disciples wanted to stop people bringing their children to Jesus, but this is what he said: “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Jesus wants us to be his friends, and to follow him as King of our lives. But you don’t have to pay to enter God’s kingdom, and you can’t learn it by being good. As this story tells us, “You don’t have to be a great, big, super-good, important person to be God’s friend”. Instead it’s like a little child getting a present. It’s a free gift. Jesus welcomes everyone who comes to him like a child and puts their trust in him.
Play: Take turns “spying” things around the room. Tell the kids that Jesus always sees them and cares for them no matter what!

WRL Babies
God cares for other people and me.
This week’s biblical concept for our babies is “God cares for other people and me.” We can teach our Littles about God’s care for our community and the world through this lesson. As you talk with your babies, tell them how much God cares for each of them, their families, friends, etc., and sing Jesus Loves Me.
