New City Catechism Q&A 24

Why was it necessary for Christ, the Redeemer, to die?

Christ died willingly in our place to deliver us from the power and penalty of sin and bring us back to God.

MV: “And you, who were once alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him.” Colossians 1:21-22

There is no possible way for people to be reconciled to God except through the atoning death of Jesus. The aim of this lesson is to help our kids understand that the only way to be reconciled to God is through the substitutionary death of Jesus.

Scripture Memory

Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty, for everything in the heavens and on earth belongs to you. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom, and you are exalted as head over all.”

Jesus Taught about God’s Kingdom (Matthew 13)

Bible Story Summary: Jesus told a parable about a king who invited people to his wedding feast. The people did not want to come. Eventually, the king’s servants invited everyone they could find and the wedding was filled with guests. A man was thrown out because he was not wearing the right wedding clothes.

Big Picture Q&A: What did Jesus teach when He was on earth? Jesus taught about God and His kingdom. He taught that all Scripture is about Him.

Christ Connection: Jesus invites us to join Him in heaven—the great wedding feast. When we receive His invitation, Jesus gets us ready by clothing us in His righteousness. Salvation is a free gift for everyone who trusts in Christ.

Family Discussion Starters:

  • Did everyone accept the king’s invitation to the wedding feast? Who did come?
  • Why was the one man thrown out of the wedding?
  • What does Jesus clothe us in? (See Isaiah 61:10.)

Family Activity: Create invitations to invite your kids to a dinner party. Provide kids with a nice outfit to wear. During the dinner, discuss how Jesus invites us into His kingdom. Tell kids that we can only enter God’s kingdom by faith in Jesus. Remind kids that Jesus clothes us in His righteousness.

Scripture Memory

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to sing praises to the Most High.”

Psalm 92:1

Washed with Tears

Pg. 280-285 | Mark 14, Luke 7 & John 12 | Video

Introduction: There was a woman who was very aware of her sin. Knowing her deep need for Jesus’ mercy in her life, she sacrificed what was most precious to her in order to worship Jesus.

Big Truth: God loves His children.

All that God does and all that God commands for His children stems from His love. No matter what happens in this life, we can trust that God is perfectly loving towards His children.

Activity: Sing, “Oh, How I Love Jesus” together. Explain that one reason we worship Jesus is because of the love that He shows to us.

The Man who would not be Quite

This story comes from Mark 10:46-52. Bartimaeus was a blind beggar, but he could see who Jesus really was. He called Jesus the “Son of David”, another name for the Christ, God’s promised perfect King, who would be from the family of King David. So in this story we call Jesus “the best King ever! The one God said was coming!” Bartimaeus believed that Jesus was the promised King, and also that Jesus could heal him. Bartimaeus believed in Jesus and followed him. Jesus welcomes everyone who believes in him and wants to follow him.

Jesus makes things better…and not just eyes. The Bible tells us that we are separated from God by our sin—the wrong things we do, say and thing. Jesus came to make this better. If we trust in Jesus, we can have our sin forgiven and be friends with God forever.

Play: Play “Red Light, Green Light”, but instead of moment use noise. When you say “green light” the Littles can be loud. When you say “red light” they are silent. “Yellow light” is a whisper.

Big Theology for Little Hearts: The Gospel

Our lesson for Sunday was “Jesus is Alive!” and we read The Gospel by Devon Provencher. This book presents words and phrases that relate to the gospel: God, man, rebellion, punishment, Jesus, perfect man, sacrifice, resurrection, response, eternal life.. From these pages, our Littles are learning foundational truths about how much God loves them.

WRL Babies

This week’s biblical concept for our babies is “God made me special.” We showed the babies their reflection and told them how God made them special and there’s no one else in the world exactly like them. As you interact with your child this week, play with her feet and tell her how God made her feet so she can walk one day. Tell her how God made her ears so can hear your voice. Tell her how God has a plan for her that only she can do, because God made her special.
