New City Catechism Q&A 25

Does Christ’s death mean all our sins can be forgiven?

Yes! Because Christ’s death on the cross fully paid the penalty for our sin, God will remember our sins no more.

MV: “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

At the cross, Jesus achieved all that was necessary for the complete forgiveness of sins for those who turn to him in repentance and faith. The aim of this lesson is to help our kids have confidence and joy in the imputed righteousness of Christ.

Scripture Memory

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; he was despised, and we didn’t value him.”

Isaiah 53:3

Jesus Taught about God’s Kingdom (Matthew 13)

Bible Story Summary: As Jesus traveled toward Jerusalem, someone asked, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?” Jesus said that the path to heaven is a like a narrow door and not everyone will enter. Only people who trust in Jesus can enter. Jesus wept over Jerusalem because He knew He would be rejected and killed there.

Big Picture Q&A: Why do people reject Jesus? People reject Jesus because all people are born with a sin nature and want to please themselves rather than obey God.

Christ Connection: Everyone is invited into the kingdom of God, but not everyone will enter. People are saved only by trusting in Jesus. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him.

Family Discussion Starters:

  • Will everyone be saved? Why not?
  • How are people saved?
  • Why did Jesus cry over the city of Jerusalem?

Family Activity: Using The Gospel: God’s Plan for Kids, create a video sharing the gospel presentation. Consider friends or family members you can share your video with. Then discuss how Jesus shared the gospel, even with people who rejected Him, and how we are called to share the good news of Jesus with all people.

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to sing praises to the Most High.”

Psalm 92:1

The Servant King

Pg. 286-293 | Mark 14 & John 13-14 | Video

Introduction: Jesus came not to be served by others, but to show God’s love as a servant. Like Jesus, we too are to serve others.

Big Truth: God sent a Savior

Our hearts are broken and our world is broken. Because we can’t fix things, we need a Savior to make things right and restore relationships. Thankfully, God sent Jesus and now the victory over sin and death is already won!

Activity: Take turns washing each others’ feet. Explain to your children that this is one way we can serve each other. Ask them other ways they can think of to serve people. Encourage and help them to serve others in these ways.

The Best Thing to Do

This story comes from Luke 10:38-42. Mary and Martha, and their brother Lazarus, were all friends of Jesus. When Jesus came to visit their home, the two women acted very differently. Mary sat at Jesus’s feet listening to him, but Martha was rushing around getting everything ready for their guest.

When Martha saw that Mary wasn’t helping, she complained to Jesus, but Jesus told her that Mary had made the best choice. Listening to Jesus is always the best thing to do!

Play: Play Simon Says. Tell your child that listening to Jesus is the most important thing we can do. We can listen to him by reading his word from the Bible and praying to him.

Our God: A Shapes Primer

“Almighty God, you are visible in all your glorious creation. Grant us eyes to see you in our everyday world, that beholding your glory, we may be shaped by your Spirit ever more in your image. Amen”

This book presents different shapes and passages that relate to them throughout the Bible. As you go throughout the week, point out different shapes to your Littles and explain how to identify different shapes (i.e. triangles have three sides, circles have no sides, etc.). Tell them that one way God loves us is by helping us learn.

WRL Babies
 Jesus grew like me.

This week’s lesson for our babies is “Jesus grew like me.” When you attend a 1 year old’s birthday party, you often see a string of photos showing how they have grown from newborn to 12 months old. We can clearly see how the child has grown. Just like our babies, Jesus grew in his first year. As well as his second, third, and so on. Remind your child that Jesus is both fully God and fully human. As a human, he grew up just like they are. Have fun with it and show your baby photos of you growing up!
