New City Catechism Q&A 29
How can we be saved?
Only by faith in Jesus Christ and in his substitutionary atoning death on the cross.
MV: “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
Only through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ can we be saved from the punishment we rightly deserve from God. The aim of this lesson is to help our kids understand clearly that salvation comes through Christ alone and to give them confidence in the saving work of Jesus on the cross.

Scripture Memory
“He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; he was despised, and we didn’t value him.”
Isaiah 53:3

Jesus Raised Lazarus (John 11-12)
Bible Story Summary: Jesus’ friend Lazarus became sick and died. Lazarus had been dead four days when Jesus arrived at his home. Martha wished Jesus had been there so Lazarus would not have died. Jesus told Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life.” Jesus wept over Lazarus. Then He said, “Lazarus, come out!” Lazarus came out of the tomb.
Big Picture Q&A: Why do people reject Jesus? People reject Jesus because all people are born with a sin nature and want to please themselves rather than obey God.
Christ Connection: When Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, He showed that He has power over death. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life.” Jesus died on the cross for our sins and rose from the dead. He gives eternal life to those who trust in Him.
Family Discussion Starters:
- What did Jesus say Lazarus’ death would result in?
- What did Jesus say is true for all who believe in Him?
- Why do we always have hope, even in death?
Family Activity: Discuss what it means when Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life.” Then look up Jesus’ six other “I am” statements in the Gospel of John (John 6:35; 8:12; 10:7; 10:11; 14:6; 15:1). Lead kids to create an I Am picture booklet to help them remember Jesus came to give us everlasting life.

The Sun Stopped Shining
Jesus Storybook pg. 302-309 | Matt. 27, Mk. 15, Lk. 23, Jn. 19 | Video
Introduction: Jesus willingly died on the cross because He deeply loves all the people God created. His death broke open the way for people to be rescued from their sin.
Big Truth: God send a Savior
Our hearts are broken and our world is broken. Because we can’t fix things, we need a Savior to make things right and restore relationships. Thankfully, God sent Jesus and now the victory over sin and death is already won!
Activity: Sing the song “Oh How I Love Jesus” and explain that Jesus died for us, even though He knew the wrong things we would do.

The Friend Who Forgives
Biblical Concept: Jesus taught that I can tell others I’m sorry when I hurt them.
Play: Forgiveness – When Jesus rose from the dead, he forgave Peter for saying they weren’t friends. Can you practice forgiveness? When you do something wrong you can say, “I’m sorry,” and when someone does something wrong to you and they say sorry, you can say, “Thank you for saying sorry, I accept your apology.”

Holy Week: An Emotions Primer
Our biblical lesson for the week is: Jesus is alive! We read Holy Week, which presents different emotions and passages that relate to them throughout the Bible. As you go throughout the week, point out different emotions your Littles are exhibiting and explain that you also have emotions and so does Jesus! Tell them that Jesus is alive and cares about how they feel.
WRL Babies
God hears me.
This week’s lesson for our babies is “God hears me.” Just like your child can hear your voice, God can hear her voices as well. Talk with talk with your child and as she “talks” back, tell her how much you love hearing her voice. Tell her that God also loves to hear her voice and she can talk to Him at anytime. Pray the Lord’s Prayer over your child, demonstrating a way we can pray to God, trusting that He hears us.
