New City Catechism Q&A 1

Question 1: What is our only hope in life and death? That we are not our own but belong to God.

Memory Verse: “For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.” Romans 14:8

Certain hope is found only in relationship with God through Jesus Christ. However, kids’ hearts are often nurtured to place their hope either in themselves or in created things, rather than in the Creator. This question aims to help our children understand that they were made by God and for God. We should all put our hope in God as we come to him through the forgiveness won for us by the Lord Jesus Christ, and know that he alone is trustworthy in life and death. (Romans 14:7-12)

Scripture Memory

37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God will all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 A second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Matthew 22:37-39

The Disciples Replace Judas (Acts 1)

Bible Story Summary: After Jesus returned to His Father in heaven, the eleven disciples went back to Jerusalem to wait for the Holy Spirit as Jesus commanded. Peter stood up and reminded them of how Judas betrayed Jesus. They needed to find a replacement for Judas. The disciples prayed over their decision. God chose Matthias to replace Judas.

Big Picture Q&A: How does the Holy Spirit help Christians? The Holy Spirit comforts us, shows us our sin, and guides us as we live for God’s glory.

Christ Connection: Matthias was chosen to join the apostles in sharing what they learned about Jesus. God calls us to join in this mission of sharing the gospel, working in community, and seeking Him in prayer.

Family Discussion Starters:

  • How did the eleven disciples choose Matthias?
  • How can we encourage other believers to be on mission for God?

Family Activity: Practice memorizing the names of the twelve disciples— Matthias and the other eleven mentioned in Acts 1:13. Challenge kids to memorize the names in alphabetical order or in the order listed in Acts. Point out some of the Bible stories, such as Acts 4 and Acts 8, that teach us how these men served God and shared Jesus with others.

God Makes a Way

Pg. 92-99 | Exodus 14-15

Introduction: God had rescued His people from slavery in Egypt, but their escape was not complete. In this story, the people of Israel find themselves trapped with their backs against the sea and the Egyptians closing in. Instead of trusting God, they panic, forgetting all that the Lord has done for them. We do not need to fear anything, because God is both powerful and good!

Big Truth: God is in control.

God is sovereign over everything, meaning He is powerful enough to accomplish everything that He has promised. This, coupled with His goodness and love, helps us trust Him in all things and for all things.

Activity: Part the Sea! Get a pan and fill it with water. Allow your kids to try and “part the water” by blowing on it or using a straw to blow it apart. Explain that God is so powerful that He miraculously parted the Red Sea so His people could cross.

The House that went Splat

Today we read The House that went Splat by Steph Williams and learned that God wants people to learn from Jesus.

Let There Be Light: An Opposites Primer

Our Littles heard about opposites today and passages that relate to them throughout the Bible (dark vs. light – Jn 1:1-4; above vs. below – Pr 8:28-29; etc.). As you go throughout the week, tell your Littles that God said His creation is good. Point out different things in the world God created and emphasize that they are good, including your child!

WRL Babies
Jesus was born.

This week’s biblical concept for our babies is “Jesus was born.” Jesus is Immanuel, God with us. God didn’t leave us alone in our sin, but sent his Son in order to save us. Speak John 3:16 over your child, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him will not perish, but have everlasting life,” and pray that he or she would come to believe in Jesus as their Lord and Savior from a young age.
