New City Catechism Q&A 2

Question 2: What is God? God is the creator of everyone and everything.

Memory Verse: “There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours.” Psalm 86:8

Our kids are growing up in a world that seeks to downplay or completely remove God from life. Even where some belief in God remains, it is often not an accurate understanding of who God is as revealed in the pages of Scripture. This lesson seeks to introduce our kids to the God of the Bible and to instill in them confidence that there is a God and that we can both know about him and know him personally.

Prayerfully ask the Lord to grow your family’s desire to engage with the Scriptures together and individually in order to grown in both knowledge and love of God.

Scripture Memory

37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God will all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 A second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Matthew 22:37-39

The Holy Spirit Came (Acts 2)

Bible Story Summary: Jesus’ followers were gathered together when all of a sudden, a sound like rushing wind came from heaven. Then tongues appeared like flames of fire, and they rested on each of the disciples. The disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit, and He gave them each the ability to speak in languages they had never spoken before!

Big Picture Q&A: How does the Holy Spirit help Christians? The Holy Spirit comforts us, shows us our sin, and guides us as we live for God’s glory.

Christ Connection: God kept His promise to send the Holy Spirit. With the Holy Spirit’s help, Jesus’ disciples could begin their work to share the gospel with the entire world. God gives the Holy Spirit to everyone who trusts in Jesus as Lord and Savior.

Family Discussion Starters:

  • How did the Holy Spirit show His power through the disciples?
  • How does this story show us God’s love for all people?

Family Activity: Use an online translator to practice speaking common words in other languages such as “Hello” or “Thank you.” Discuss the disciples’ ability to speak in various languages so the crowd could hear about Jesus. Remind kids that God loves people of all nationalities and will save all who trust in Jesus as Savior and Lord.

Ten Ways to be Perfect

Pg. 100-107 | Exodus 16-17

Introduction: God rescued His people and now He wants to show them how to live wisely. The Ten Commandments were not created to rescue the people from their sins, but to help them have true joy and a great relationship with Him. We follow God’s rules as a response to His love and wisdom. Help your children see the right motivation for their actions.

Big Truth: God loves his children.

All that God does and all that God commands for His children stems from His love. No matter what happens in this life, we can trust that God is perfectly loving towards His children.

Activity: Sing “Love the Lord” and explain to your child that we follow God’s rules out of love and thankfulness for who He is and what He has done for us through Jesus.

The Best Thing to Do

This story comes from Luke 10:38-42. Mary and Martha, and their brother Lazarus, were all friends of Jesus. When Jesus came to visit their home, the two women acted very differently. Mary sat at Jesus’s feet listening to him, but Martha was rushing around getting everything ready for their guest.

When Martha saw that Mary wasn’t helping, she complained to Jesus, but Jesus told her that Mary had made the best choice. Listening to Jesus is always the best thing to do!

Play: Play Simon Says. Tell your child that listening to Jesus is the most important thing we can do. We can listen to him by reading his word from the Bible and praying to him.

WRL Babies
God said His creation is good.

This week’s biblical concept for our babies is “God said His creation is good.” We read Let their be light: An Opposites Primer and talked about how each part of God’s creation is good. We also held up a mirror to your child and told him that God also created him and declared him to be good. As you go throughout your week with your child, remind him or her frequently of God’s good creation including you and your child!
