New City Catechism Recap

This Sunday our 4th-5th Graders recapped the first 6 weeks of the New City Catechism.

Q&A 1: What is our only hope in life and death? That we are not our own but belong to God.

MV: Rom. 4:8 “For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.”

Q&A 2: What is God? God is the creator of everyone and everything.

MV: Psalm 86:8 “No pagan god is like you, O Lord. None can do what you do!”

Q&A 3: How many persons are there in God? There are three persons in one God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

MV: 2 Cor. 13:14 “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”

Q&A 4: How and why did God create us? God created us male and female in his own image to glorify him.

MV: Genesis 1:27 “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

Q&A 6: How can we glorify God? By loving him and by obeying his commands and laws.

MV: Deuteronomy 11:1 “You shall therefore love the Lord your God and keep his charge, his statutes, his rules, and his commandments always.”

Scripture Memory

“How, then, can they call on him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about him? And how can they hear without a preacher?”

Peter Continued to Preach (Acts 4)

Bible Story Summary: After the man who was lame was healed by Peter and John, the religious leaders asked where their power came from. Peter said the man was healed by the power of Jesus. Then the religious leaders told Peter and John to stop preaching in the name of Jesus. Peter said they could not be quiet. They must share the gospel with others.

Big Picture Q&A: Why does God command Christians to tell others about Jesus? We tell others about Jesus so they will hear and believe the good news.

Christ Connection: Peter continued to preach about Jesus even when it was difficult. Not even the religious leaders could stop Jesus’ followers from sharing the good news about Jesus. The gospel is great news that we must share if we believe in Jesus Christ.

Family Discussion Starters:

  • Why is sharing the good news of the gospel often met with rejection or hostility?
  • How can we boldly share the gospel with others?

Family Activity: Invite each family member to draw another family member’s name to be their secret encourager. Explain that each secret encourager should write notes or do chores for the selected family member throughout the week. Remind kids that Peter boldly continued to preach the gospel and encouraged others to trust in Jesus.

The Good Shepherd

Pg. 130-135 | Psalm 51, 23; 2 Samuel 7

Introduction: Although David made many mistakes, his constant return and dependence on the Lord is recorded in the Psalms. God’s providence and our dependence is shown through these writings. David uses imagery to point to our need for a perfect leader. Jesus is the ultimate shepherd as He guides us and gave His own life for us as a good shepherd would do for his flock.

Big Truth: God wants to talk with us

God wants a relationship with us. A great way to pursue this is prayer. God is a loving Father who delights in talking with His children. We can pray anytime, anywhere. Prayer is an opportunity to pour out our hearts to God.

Activity: Sing the song “He’s Got the Whole World” and explain that God cares about each of us like a shepherd does for his sheep.

The Garden, the Curtain, and the Cross: Life and the First Garden

God’s Word tells us it was wonderful to live in God’s garden, and it was wonderful to live with him. We know this because in Genesis 1:31 the Bible tells us, “God looked at everything he had made, and it was very good.”

Play: “Corners” – Put a picture in each corner of your space of something from the Garden of Eden: animals, trees, the first people, a crown representing God. Have your family dance to music and, when the music stops, choose a corner to run to. Have smaller versions of the pictures ready in a bag and pull one out at random, saying as you do, “God made (animals/trees/people)” or (when you pull out a crown picture) “Best of all, God was there!” Whoever has chosen the corner that matches the picture you draw out wins for that round! “What a fun game! Just like our game, the garden was full of laughing and playing and smiling and fun. But the best thing about the garden was that God was there!”

WRL 2 Year Olds
Noah and the Very Big Boat

This is the story God sparing Noah from the great flood! You can watch the story here.

Play: Name that Animal – Make different animal sounds and see if the kids can guess the animal it belongs to (ex. Monkey, elephant, dog, cat, goat, bear, tiger, etc.) Explain that even though the whole world was bad, bad, bad, God promised to keep Noah and his family safe through the flood. He kept his promise and then made another promise to never flood the earth again.

Big Theology for Little Hearts: JESUS

Our lesson for Sunday was “Jesus loves me” and we read JESUS by Devon Provencher.

Through this lesson, we learned about Jesus’ deity, incarnation, atonement, and resurrection, as well as that he’s king, the Son of God, rescuer, sinless, prophet, and priest.

As you go throughout your week, notice when you encounter the different aspects of who Jesus is and point those truths out to your child. Have a fun dance session with this song.

WRL Babies
God hears me.

This week’s lesson for our babies is “God hears me.” Just like your child can hear your voice, God can hear her voices as well. Talk with talk with your child and as she “talks” back, tell her how much you love hearing her voice. Tell her that God also loves to hear her voice and she can talk to Him at anytime. Pray the Lord’s Prayer over your child, demonstrating a way we can pray to God, trusting that He hears us.
